7 Signs Your House Exterior Needs Repainting

Exterior paint failure doesn't happen overnight — it shows warning signs well before the situation becomes urgent. Here's what to watch for.

1. Fading and Chalking

If rubbing your hand across the siding leaves a chalky residue on your palm, the paint's protective binders have broken down from UV exposure — common on Spokane's south and west-facing walls after years of intense sun.

2. Cracking or Alligatoring

A pattern of fine cracks resembling alligator skin means the paint has lost flexibility and moisture is likely getting underneath. This needs attention before it progresses to peeling.

3. Peeling or Bubbling

Visible peeling, especially in sheets, usually indicates moisture trapped beneath the paint — often from inadequate surface prep during a previous paint job, or a moisture source like a leaking gutter.

4. Caulk Gaps and Cracks

Cracked or missing caulk around windows, doors, and trim joints lets moisture behind the siding, which accelerates paint failure and can lead to wood rot underneath.

5. Wood Rot or Soft Spots

Soft, spongy trim or siding indicates water damage that needs repair before any new paint is applied — painting over rot only hides the problem temporarily.

6. Visible Wood Grain Through Paint

When wood grain becomes visible through the paint film, the coating has thinned to the point of minimal protection.

7. It's Simply Been Too Long

Quality exterior paint in Spokane's climate typically lasts 7-10 years. If you can't remember the last time your house was painted, it's worth a free inspection.
